A Prairie Journal is an online magazine dedicated to providing a creative forum for writers and artists whose work reflects our relationship with the prairie and related landscapes -- the complex network of grasses and wildflowers, oak savannas, wetlands and the wildlife they shelter. The prairie once covered the North America's midsection from Indiana westward to the Rocky Mountains and reached from Manitoba on the north into Texas on the south. Today, less than 5 percent of the original tallgrass prairie remains. During the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, nature writing and sketching was a popular exercise. We hope that A Prairie Journal will encourage a reawakening of those traditions by inspiring artists and writers to share their work that showcases this breathtaking landscape as well as provide provocative commentary on the changes we have wrought upon it. A Prairie Journal was founded in 2006 by journalist LeAnn Spencer.
